DIFFERENT WAYS TO SAY SNOW IN FINNISH

In Finnish, there are more than forty words to say snow. Curiously there isn’t any word to say “to snow”.

Frozen precipitation are still falling

5.- räntä: sleet

6.- tuisku: snow rain with strong wind

11.- ahto: broken ice and then returned to ice

12.- ahtauma: formation of ice drift

14.- kide: crystalline ice (ice crystals)

15.- kohva: gray ice formed on wet snow

16.- paanne: Ice layers (usually the waves collide with ice and frozen just above)

17.- railo: pressure ridge on ice

18.- röpelö: ice is not smooth, uneven

19.- tökkö: ice with ice on top

20.- iljanne: a thin layer of snow on the ice

21.- hanki: a uniform layer of snow on the ground, especially if it is enough for skiing

22.- huurre: Frost; granulated ice (like what's in your freezer, which is 25 degrees warmer than Finland in winter)

24.- kinos: snow drift, a loose pile of snow, especially if formed by the wind

25.- kaljama: a thick layer of ice on the ground, lethal in spring

26.- kuura: the frost; frozen dew

27.- nietos: a pile of long and hard snow (may be frozen)

28.- nuoska: snow with which you can make balls, usually made with thin snow has melted a bit

29.- polanne: a hard layer of packed snow

30.- tykky:big chunks of snow, especially those that form in the snowy trees

These words aren’t used a lot.

PERSONAL OPINION

I think this topic is interesting, because I learn more about other cultures. Before doing the search I didn’t know there wasn’t any word to say “to snow” and many for saying things that we usually don't say, because in Spain are not common.

It has been difficult do it in English. My level of this language is so bad. Sorry for the spelling and grammar mistakes.
